This new green oasis, Johnson Street Park, is set to transform the area with the permanent closure of Johnson Street, creating a vibrant urban ecosystem for the community.
Located on the corner of Normanby Road, Johnston Street, and Munro Street, the proposed Johnson Street Park is a collaborative effort between Gamuda Land and the City of Port Phillip. This project is part of the priority infrastructure in the Victorian Government’s Fishermans Bend Framework. Positioned opposite to our $200 million development, The Canopy, the park is expected to be completed in 2026, ready to welcome both local and broader communities.
Collaborative Efforts and Sustainable Goals
We are working alongside landscape architects, Oculus, non-profit vegetation specialists, The Heart Gardening Project, SUGi, and Indigenous urban design advisors, MURRI : YUL. This collaboration aims to honour the site’s rich ecological history by planting over 4,500 native plants, including 81 native trees, to restore and enhance the local flora. This will transform the park into a lively oasis, featuring a diverse mix of native grasses, tea trees, and wattles. These plants will not only provide a changing palette of colours, fragrances and textures throughout the seasons, but also support local wildlife and promote biodiversity.
Seamless Integration with The Canopy
The upcoming park will adjoin our sustainable mixed-use precinct, The Canopy, which will feature 213 apartments and 13 retail tenancies upon its completion in 2026. The park’s integration with The Canopy provides a seamless connection through ground-level retail and dining options, contributing to a network of open spaces throughout the area. In addition, the park will cater to diverse interests with nature play areas, picnic spots, BBQ facilities, and walking and cycling pathways. Lush green spaces will offer perfect retreats for relaxation and recreation.
Nature and Sustainability at the Heart
Nature plays a pivotal role in The Canopy’s design, with green spaces extending from the park to a podium-level garden and a rooftop oasis. Residents will enjoy amenities like a rooftop spa and alfresco dining areas. Our dedication to sustainability is reflected with our ambitious goal to plant 1 million trees globally by 2030, with nearly 920,000 trees already planted.
Johnson Street Park is set to become part of a planning scheme amendment request, awaiting further consideration by the Minister for Planning anticipated later this year. During the public consultation period, the community warmly embraced the park design, highlighting the anticipation for a more vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood.
As we continue to prioritise environmental sustainability and community well-being, Fishermans Bend can look forward to a greener, more connected future.
